ICJ and Model ICJ

Model International Court of Justice is a moot court that simulates the work of the UN International Court of Justice.

In broad terms, the Model Court is a week-long workshop held annually within the framework of Moscow International Model United Nations. The session usually takes place in April at the premises of MGIMO University, Moscow, Russia and lasts for 5 full working days. This year the session is scheduled for 12-16 of April.

The Court consists of 15 Judges, 2-4 advocates of the parties, a chairperson who leads the session and up to 2 secretaries providing administrative assistance to the chairperson.

Apart from other Model UN bodies, Model ICJ is something special for law students. Being a moot court, it provides an opportunity to try the role of a judge or an advocate dealing with international law and thus to apply your theoretical knowledge to a practical case. More about the 2010 case

Model ICJ follows the rules of the real ICJ. First of all, the case is always picked up from the list of pending ICJ cases. Second, judges are to base their decision on the sources of law defined in Article 38 of the ICJ Statute. Third, the debates are structured in strict adherence to ICJ rules of procedure. It should also be noted that the official language of the Model ICJ is English.

As a law student of the 3d year (or older) you are welcome to join us as either a judge or an advocate. Please be aware that the places at the Model ICJ are competitive. More about participation
