Participation

There are two kinds of participants:

-advocates
-judges

Please note that only law students at their third year (or older) are eligible. If you do not meet these requirements you are welcome to attend the session as an observer (please send us your observer application).

ADVOCATES ("COUNSELS")

Description. Advocates are researchers and public speakers. They are responsible for preparing and presenting the legal position and supporting it by facts. They prepare one written memorandum on behalf of their party by the date specified below. At the beginning of the session they make a presentation before judges explaining the position and may be asked any question by judges, the other party's advocates or a chairperson. Usually advocates find it useful not only to give a speech but to support it with e.g. a power-point presentation or some printed materials. Advocates assist the Court coordinator to prepare handouts for judges (usually a set of legal documents) which are distributed among judges directly or published at the site. During the whole process advocates work in close cooperation with the Court Direction. Advocates are encouraged to coordinate themselves with the advocates of the other party.

There is one or two trainings for advocates shortly before the session. During it advocates present their positions before the Court coordinator (separately). Procedural aspects are explained. In case of need a law professor is invited. In case where participation at the training in person is not possible, we use other possible ways to make sure our session is ready (Internet is of great help). Details of the virtual training are negotiated with advocates directly.

Places available. There may be up to two advocates representing each party, four in total.

Eligibility. A law student at his/her third year (or older).

Application. A person wishing to become an advocate shall choose a party to represent and study the case carefully (start with, but not limit yourself to, the official ICJ website materials), relevant sources of law and compose the document containing the detailed position of your party (memorandum). Besides, you shall compose a list of questions you would like to ask a prospective judge to assure this candidate made himself aware of the factual side of the case. For further requirements and instructions please follow the links: case memoranda, case questionnaire for prospective judges. You are to send the both documents to moscow.icj@gmail.com by the date specified below. Since applications are processed on a rolling basis, early applications are encouraged. The works are then evaluated. The winning memoranda are published on the site.
After that the nominated advocates shall register for the Model ICJ using our website. You are to pay the registration fee (500 rubles for RF citizens or persons studying in the RF, $75 for other participants). More on the registration fee

JUDGES

Description. Primary function of a judge is to evaluate information received by the advocates. This includes deliberating on the aspects of the case and adopting the judgement.
There is one training for judges. Bearing in mind our judges come from different universities we carry out such training at the beginning of the session itself. During it rules of procedure and flow of debates are explained.

Places available. The Court consists of 15 Judges.

Eligibility. A law student at his/her third year (or older).

Application. To become a judge you shall send the answered case questionnaire to moscow.icj@gmail.com by the date specified below. While case questionnaire reflects your knowledge of the factual side of the case, sample judgement demonstrates your logic and ability to analyse. Requirements and instructions are under the links above.
The works are then evaluated.
After that the nominated judges shall register for the Model ICJ using our website. You are to pay the registration fee (500 rubles for RF citizens or persons studying in the RF, $75 for other participants).
